December 2019: Congratulations to Dr Naif Ashri who successfully defended his thesis, entitled, “Ecotoxicology of Sediment-Associated Single and Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes in Sediment Dwelling Cockles”. External examiner, Prof Jeanette Rotchell from University of Hull, and Prof Steve Euston (Internal).

October 2019: Funding success: “Seabed Mining And Resilience To EXperimental impact (SMARTEX)” has been successful in attacting £4.5m pounds. It is being led by the NationalOceanography Centre (NOC)
in Southampton.  Heriot-Watt’s Prof Andrew Sweetman (Lyell Centre) will be leading the Ecosystem Function work package and Dr. Mark Hartl the ecotoxicology work.

October 2019: PhD student Ed Bolger presents his work at the MASTS ASM 2019 in Glasgow.

January 2019: Dr Hartl attended a Microplastics Workshop at University College Cork, Ireland, and presented his work on monitoring microplastics in marine intertidal sediments.

May 2018: Dr Hartl discusses the significance of long-term microplastics monitoring in the marine environment for evidence-based policy decisions.

March 2018: Dr Hartl welcomes the deposit return scheme for plastic bottles announced by Michael Gove and points out that Scotland announced a scheme in September 2017.

March 2018: Dr Hartl presents his microplatics monitoring work in the Firth of Forth at the Procupine Marine Natural History Meeting 2018 at the National Museum Scotland.

February 2018: Dr Hartl’s research on microplastics in Orkney and the Firth of Forth cited twice during the
